Justice Sheel Nagu appointed as Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court

Justice Sheel Nagu, previously a judge at the Madhya Pradesh High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Born on January 1, 1965, Justice Nagu began his legal career as an advocate in October 1987. He practiced at the Madhya Pradesh High Court, handling cases related to constitutional law, service matters, labor disputes, and criminal law.

Judicial career and achievements

Justice Sheel Nagu was elevated as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 27, 2011. During his tenure of over 12 years, he authored more than 499 reported judgments, highlighting his significant contribution to the judiciary. His appointment as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court was recommended by the Supreme Court collegium on December 27, 2023.

Interim leadership and vacancy

Currently, Justice GS Sandhawalia serves as the acting Chief Justice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, having been appointed on February 4, 2024. The position had been vacant since the retirement of Chief Justice RS Jha on October 13 the previous year. During the interim period, Justice Ritu Bahri served as the acting Chief Justice before being appointed as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court in February.
